Pinkie Pie trusting Gummy to get the job done? -_- Sorry Pinkie, I think that's outside his expertise.

And only RD and PP?

Geeze. I wonder why Fluttershy is not being summoned by the writers to a place with predators as the main sapient species? -_-

I SEE the writer sweeping it under the rug. I CAN SEE THEM sweeping it under the rug.

It's VERY SHOCKING to see RD has NO LOVE for Gilda, and in fact now sees all Griffins that way, and acts like she and Gilda were NEVER friends!

I'd say something about that, but I know what the response would be. -_-

I'll just say this is WHY I asked Kendell2 to get Hooves and Talons posted on fimfiction.net BEFORE this episode aired!

So that treasure is why Griffins are culturally nicer.

And geeze, puppets on strings, at least Celestia is a sapient being. The tree is ALIEN.

I know that might sound hypocritical coming from me, but the ponies KNOW Celestia. I don't trust the Tree of Harmony. At all. (I know this is a little girl show that tries to AVOID the 'don't trust authority' motif that exists in most kids entertainment these days.).

And Gilda shows, and the two act like they've always been enemies rather than friends who had a horrible falling out.

And that Gilda can't say two words without insulting something gets old fast. Her original character, her insults had a purpose.

I'm guessing the idol originally belonged to Arimaspi and he was just taking back his property. That being said, while it's his property, it certainly did a WORLD MORE GOOD to the griffins than it does to him sitting on his kitchen table.

Gilda, "Typical pony hero complex."
First clever thing Gilda says in the entire episode.

How do you save people who don't want to be saved?

And the griffins sure are economy minded. They don't seem as greedy as dragons for one simple reason.
Dragons? It's want, take, have.
Griffins at least only take bits in EXCHANGE for something.

Pinkie Pie suggests invoking the power of music numbers.

And we all have flash backs to Over the Barrel.

Pinkie Pie, other races don't communicate to each other through singing like ponies do.

No singing signs . . . .

Interesting that the griffins use pony currency.

Then again it's apparent their own economy has collapsed into rubble along with everything else.

No central government.
No cultural identity.
No language of their own.
No economy of their own.
Barely any public if any works from the sight of things.

Is it any wonder Gilda wants out of this hole?

PINKIE PIE BROKE A TOOTH?!

SHE'S FROM A FAMILY OF ROCK FARMERS!!! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!

Again. RD seems to totally forget that Gilda and her GOT ALONG SWIMMINGLY back at Junior Speedster camp, or they WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN FRIENDS TO BEGIN WITH!!!!!

AGH!

Pinkie Pie spots Gilda CARING about somegriff getting hurt!

"Just some griffon I know." One you were took a moment of your own life to be concerned about out. (FINALLY!!!!!!!! Even if Gilda is a jackass, at least she isn't a 1-D jackass!!!!)

"We don't have friends here!"

I do like that Gilda jabs at Pony belief in friendship only for Pinkie Pie turns out to be referring to something practical.

Then Gilda does the unspeakable, and OPENS UP A TINY BIT!
"I used to have a friend once, but you saw how that turned out."

FINALLY!

Losing a friend, regardless of the reason, is painful and tragic. And BOTH Gilda and RD bury that pain by pretending that that friendship never existed.

Well, if they wanted to show griffins are heartless bastards, they did just that. Leaving someone to die because their wallet is empty? Haven't these griffins ever heard of credit? Not to mention how useful having someone OWE YOU THEIR LIFE is!!!!

Okay. Pinkie Pie has the realization "the lost magic object isn't what will snaps these griffins out of their own filth and self-pity" got it, nice subversion, understood, Pinkie Pie realizing that and helping the griffins help themselves, got it.

And I imagine a 'cool girl' like Gilda, having BAKING as a talent, isn't something she wants well known.

And we see the tree of harmony doesn't care just about ponies.

But why the heck is Rainbow Dash here? Just to make the wrong choice? That's stupid. RD thinking she's in a Daring Do novel I can take. But I doubt that's why the tree of harmony would send her here.

"I need your help to save Rainbow Dash!"

"Not my problem."

"She's your friend!"

"Was my friend."

"Can't you remember when she was?!"

" . . . Of course I can."

Okay. Now this I actually like.

Geeze. Hoops, Score, and Dumb-Bell were jerks even back then. What is WITH those guys? (At least they seemed to mellow out after RD won Best Young Fliers.).

Hate is a virus. It infects others and they become carriers as well. Flutter shy was infected, she just knows its wrong and buries it as deeply as she can, not seeing it festers she doesn't ACCEPT her anger.

And we learn Gilda and Fluttershy became friends with Rainbow Dash UNDER THE EXACT SAME CIRCUMSTANCES!!!!!

In a way, those three are the REASON Rainbow Dash became friends with Shy and Gilda to begin with. And the reason RD did the Sonic Rainboom, got her cutie mark, and basically set into the motion the lives of the mane six to save the world!

Now I imagine a well meaning character, or a villain, teaching those three to be nice . . . only for it to backfire horribly.

Reminds me of Xiaolin Shown Down where Chase Young, in the timeline where he was a hero but the rest of the world was a mess, decided that a villain wasn't who he WANTED to be, but a villain was what he NEEDED to be for the rest of the world's sake. (And is shown to the biggest and most selfless sacrifice made in show.)

And after the trip down memory lane, Gilda agreed to help but rejects the idea of that making them friends. Pinkie Pie doesn't buy it for a second. But lets Gilda keep her ego.

And we get 'friend or idol' hey Gilda, I thought you said no Griffin cared about that thing? At least now we know that what Gilda said, and likely other griffins said, is because she's basically lost all hope for her species.

Uh. Did Gilda's voice action just change? 0-o?

Did Gilda just DO THE RIGHT THINGS?!

It's not about the object, it's about what it embodied. (The griffins as a flock, rather than separate.)

Okay. Was not expecting Gilda to actually do the right thing. I figured she was there just to remind us "HATE THIS CHARACTER!"

I was surprised.

On the first one, you need a functioning economic system to set up a credit regulation on something, and a government that can enforce said regulations with laws. The Griffons lack both.
On the second one, it was kind of explained that all Griffons look out for number one, AKA themselves, and care little to nothing about anyone else. Having someone owe them their lives, to them, would seem kind of worthless.
