This world building entry was submitted by Kendell2, after watching some G1 and chatting about it with me this came up and was hammered out into this. As such it can be considered optional canon.

Neither light nor dark magic are inherently evil by nature. While evil magic does exist and is the literal stuff of Nightmares, light magic is merely ruled by more easier to control emotions while dark magic is governed by emotions that more readily control their user.

Lord Tirek became a Titan, a mortal with godly might but not the position and responsibility of one, by consuming a manifestation of all Dark Magic in the world, mutating into a being capable of leveling an empire by himself...but his opposite extreme ultimately existed. No, not the Moochick, though he is proof that great power does not always corrupt, regardless of the source.

The Wands possessed by the Princesses of Ponyland were a focus and control for all the light magic in the entirety of Ponyland, connected and charged straight from the Heart itself. Why the wands came into existence is a mystery. Perhaps they had simply always existed, perhaps they were introduced into reality to balance out the unholy amounts of Dark Magic Morning Star's gambit released, or perhaps for another reason. The Princess Ponies themselves were shrouded in myth and legend, and so were their Wands...But what is certain is that Lavan grew consumed by a hunger for their power, just as the power of Pandora's Box had become an obsession with Tirek. Where Lavan learned to absorb magic is unknown, but when he absorbed the power of the Wands, he became Tirek's opposite extreme. A Titan born from Light Magic with every bit the destructive potential of Tirek himself.

Where Tirek's body had twisted into a hideous demonic visage, Lavan was turned into a beautiful being of radiant crystal. Where Tirek's magic was shrouded in fire and shadow, Lavan's was a multicolored bolt of light. But inside both a heart as black as midnight holding power on a shrine as if it were a God.

Even with only partial mastery of his near limitless power, Lavan had caused cataclysms and upheavals throughout the entire country and had the power to cause volcanic eruptions with a thought. Had he not been killed before he could master them, the world could very well have suffered under another Tirek...this one powered not by Darkness, but by Light.

Power is not good or evil, it simply is. It is what we choose to do with it that matters.

Now I wonder how Triek and Lavan would do if they ever encountered one another. Fight one another or would they team up to conquer everything. Oh who I am kidding they wouldn't share and fight each other on sight. Begs the question who would win then? My money would be on Triek.
